Stringtown Road area – A slash pile atop a ridge near Carpenter Creek Road between Dilley and Gales Creek ignited, – inexplicably, according to what property owners told fire crews – this evening on Wednesday, September 5, prompting a response from crews from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue, Cornelius Fire Department, Gaston Rural Fire District, Banks Fire District and the Oregon Department of Forestry.

The fire has been knocked down, with crews working with heavy equipment and the landowners to tear apart the slash pile to ensure it is out cold.

With the flames burning just a few hundred yards behind and above their home, Dana and Aaron Harding stood in their driveway and watched the flames as other onlookers gathered.

“Too close!” exclaimed Aaron, as heavy plumes of smoke rose into the sky.

Initially called in at 6:53 p.m., the fire was under control in well under an hour and never left the slash pile, according to Forest Grove Fire & Rescue public information officer Matt Johnston.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
