Forest Grove – Calling all of those with a green thumb or anyone wanting to learn more ordinary and not-so-ordinary gardening techniques.
2018’s A Gathering of Gardeners takes place this Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Forest Grove Senior and Community Center, located at 2037 Douglas Street.
Debby Garman, board president of the Gathering of Gardeners, said the event is a gift to the community for people who don’t know much about gardening, and those who do and want to become more knowledgeable about the past time.
“There will be a lot of information there,” Garman said. “There will be mentors in the room to answer questions, inexpensive vegetable starts, tool sharpening, books and tools — a whole lot.”
Other activities include tables of giveaways related to gardening, kneading fresh dough and tasting bread made from locally-grown historic grain varieties, making seed-bomb balls to take home, a raffle for floral baskets (six tickets for $5 or $1 each), beehives and information on pollinators, tasting of vegetable recipes, tool sharpening, and “table topic” demonstration discussions, including weed wars, dryland project gardening, worm bin construction and management, and the sharing of best practices.
Additionally, there will be a self-guided tour of the Side Yard Gardens at the senior and community center, and kids activities, including exploring soil and seeds under a microscope.
“The event is for people of all ages and abilities,” Garman said. “If anyone has basic questions about dealing with weeds or more advanced questions about growing vegetables, they will be able to have those questions answered (at Saturday’s event.)”
The event is free to the public. For more information email email@example.com.
